In the commercial sector, thanks to its leadership in various components, Avio is a partner to the world 's most important aircraft engine manufacturers, such as General Electric, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce. The commercial market is characterised by fierce competition and extremely high technological content, reliability and safety levels. The indispensable prerequisite to maintain a leading role in this sector is to be able to guarantee design and construction standards of absolute excellence.

Nowadays, over 60% of the "wide body" commercial aircraft in service is equipped with at least one component designed and produced by Avio.

Among the numerous collaboration projects underway, we should mention in particular: a project with General Electric for the GE90, the biggest and most powerful commercial turbofan now existing and a project with Rolls-Royce for Trent 900, the engine earmarked for the Airbus A380.
Another major collaboration project with Pratt & Whitney Canada concerns engines PW308 and PW150 for regional transport aircraft, and a smaller unit, the PW625, currently being developed, for general and corporate aviation applications.
With its Canadian partner, Avio is also engaged in a major project concerning the PW800 (formerly ATFI), an engine conceived for "regional jet" propulsion, for which Avio is developing the power transmission gearbox connecting the fan to the low pressure turbine shaft, according to a "geared fan" architecture.

Avio is also a leader in the sector of helicopter engines, developing and producing turboshafts and power transmission gearboxes for the main rotor and the tail rotor.
In this connection, in addition to its consolidated partnership with General Electric relative to the T700 family engine, we should mention the joint projects conducted with Eurocopter and Sikorsky in the field of power transmission gearboxes.

Power transmission gearbox

The power transmission for both turboprop and helicopter application is one of Avio’s key products. This experience dates back to the '60s and, since then, the Company has continuously invested in order to remain at the leading edge in the sector.

Accessory gearbox and gear-train

The accessory gearbox is a key module in modern jet and turbofan engines. Its function is to transfer mechanical power from the engine shaft, through a properly designed gear train, to different shafts, rotating at selected speeds, with accessories and components like starters, hydraulic pump, etc.

Low Pressure Turbine

The low pressure turbine is one of the main engine modules. It drives the low pressure compressor or the fan by taking energy from the hot gas coming from the engine combustion chamber and high pressure turbine.

Combustion chambers, re-heat, exhaust system

Avio began its involvement in the analysis and design of combustion systems in various military and space propulsion programs during the '80s. The development of the EJ200 re-heat system helped improve the design and testing capability and manufacturing technologies

Auxiliary Power Unit

The Auxiliary Power Unit mainly provides electrical power to drive aircraft accessories and compressed air to start the engine.
Avio developed and produced the auxiliary power unit for the military aircraft AMX, and is a partner in the Consortium which has developed and is producing the APU for the Typhoon Aircraft.
