Avio has played an outstanding role in promoting the 20th century’s great technological revolution in marine propulsion.
Fiat’s research laboratories and plants started designing and producing marine engines as early as 1903. Safety and high performance have been consolidated characteristics ever since.
The history of Fiat engines runs parallel to the great technological leaps in the sector: from petrol engines, installed in the early rudimentary submarines, to diesel engines and, more recently, the highly sophisticated modern gas turbine propulsion system.
In recent years, Avio has developed its leading-edge know-how in the marine application of aero-derivative turbine engines.
Currently, Avio is partner and Marine System Supplier (MSS) of General Electric.
Our gas turbines
The Gas turbines for marine propulsion are based on the GE aero-derivative engine family.
This family includes:

Avio capability in Marine applications stems from its experience on the wider aeronautical field. In fact, Avio is usually involved in development programmes for commercial and military aircraft engines mainly for what concerns the Turbine, mechanical transmissions (power and auxiliaries drive train) and space propulsion programmes (solid and cryogenic propulsion).
